Underfloor Heating

Comfortable, even warmth throughout your home

Underfloor heating provides a comfortable way to heat your home without relying entirely on radiators. By distributing warmth across the floor, it creates a more even temperature throughout the room while freeing up valuable wall space.

Willis Heating Ltd installs underfloor heating systems for homeowners across Seaford, Newhaven, Peacehaven, Lewes and the surrounding area.

Whether you’re renovating your home, building an extension, planning a new bathroom or considering a new heating system, we’ll look at the property and help you decide whether underfloor heating is the right solution.

How does underfloor heating work?

Rather than heating a room from individual radiators, underfloor heating turns a much larger area of the floor into the heat emitter.

With a water-based system, warm water circulates through a network of pipes installed beneath the finished floor. The heat transfers through the floor and into the room above, helping to create a comfortable and consistent temperature.

Because of the much larger surface area, wet underfloor heating can operate effectively at lower water temperatures than conventional radiators.

Where can underfloor heating be installed?

Underfloor heating can work particularly well when it’s considered as part of a wider building or renovation project.

This might include:

  • New extensions
  • Kitchen renovations
  • New bathrooms and en-suites
  • Open-plan living spaces
  • Ground-floor renovations
  • New-build properties
  • Changes to an existing heating system

It may also be possible to install underfloor heating in an existing property, although the floor construction, available height, insulation and amount of disruption involved all need to be considered.

We’ll look at what’s practical for your particular property rather than assuming the same system will suit every home.

Underfloor heating for bathrooms

Bathrooms are one of the areas where underfloor heating can make a noticeable difference.

As well as providing warmth throughout the room, there’s the added comfort of a warm floor underfoot.

If Willis Heating is designing and installing your new bathroom, we can consider the heating requirements at the planning stage and incorporate underfloor heating into the overall project where appropriate.

Underfloor heating and air source heat pumps

Underfloor heating can be particularly well suited to an air source heat pump.

Heat pumps generally work most efficiently when supplying heating at lower water temperatures. Because an underfloor system has a much larger surface area from which to emit heat than conventional radiators, the two technologies can work very effectively together when correctly designed.

If you’re considering changing your heating system, Willis Heating can look at the underfloor heating and heat source together rather than treating them as two separate decisions.

Good system design matters

Underfloor heating isn’t simply a matter of laying pipes beneath the floor.

The heating requirements of the rooms, floor construction, insulation, pipe layout, controls, water temperatures and final floor covering can all affect how well the finished system performs.

That’s why it’s worth considering underfloor heating early in a renovation or building project.

Willis Heating can look at your requirements and how the underfloor heating will work with the rest of your heating system before installation begins.

Underfloor heating controls

A properly designed system can allow different areas or zones of your home to be controlled according to how they’re used.

For example, you may want different temperatures or heating schedules in a kitchen, living area and bedroom.

We’ll consider how you want to use the rooms and advise on appropriate controls as part of the system.

Professional underfloor heating installation

The performance of underfloor heating depends heavily on good design and installation.

We’ll consider how the system needs to integrate with your existing or proposed heating system and coordinate the installation with the wider project.

Once installed, the system will be checked and set up so that it operates correctly with your heating controls and heat source.

Underfloor Heating FAQs

Can underfloor heating replace radiators?

It can in many situations, provided the system has been correctly designed to meet the heat requirements of the room or property. Some homes use underfloor heating in certain areas and radiators elsewhere.

Can underfloor heating be fitted in an existing home?

Yes, it can be possible. However, retrofitting needs more consideration than incorporating it into a new floor. Existing floor construction, floor levels, insulation and disruption all need to be assessed before deciding on the best approach.

What flooring can I have over underfloor heating?

Underfloor heating can work with a range of floor finishes, but different materials transfer heat differently.

Tiles are particularly effective, while wood, engineered flooring and carpet require more careful consideration of the product and its thermal resistance.

If you already know which flooring you’d like, tell us during the planning stage.

Does underfloor heating work with a gas boiler?

Yes. A water-based underfloor heating system can be connected to a suitable boiler as part of a properly designed wet central heating system.

Does underfloor heating work with an air source heat pump?

Yes, and the combination can work particularly well.

Heat pumps are most efficient at lower flow temperatures, while underfloor heating can provide the required room heat using lower-temperature water because of its large surface area.

Is underfloor heating expensive to run?

There isn’t a single answer because running costs depend on the system, heat source, insulation, controls, floor covering and how you use your heating.

A well-designed water-based system can operate at lower flow temperatures than traditional radiators, which can work particularly well with a suitable boiler or heat pump.
